Police say human remains have been discovered in the wreckage of a home in Brampton after a possible explosion and fire causing severe damage to multiple homes.

Peel Regional Police gave an update on the investigation on Friday and said human remains had been discovered at the site of Thursday’s serious fire, but could not give details on how many bodies or victims were found.

“We don’t have any idea if this is one person or multiple or who,” a police spokesperson told Insauga.com of the remains which were discovered on Friday morning.

Police say the home on Van Kirk Drive near McLaughlin Road was fully engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived at the scene around 1:20 p.m. on Thursday after receiving a 911 call about a possible explosion.

Witnesses reportedly heard explosions at the scene and Brampton Fire and Emergency Services (BFAS) Chief Bill Boyes says two homes suffered “significant fire damage” in the blaze.

A video of the blaze posted on social media showed one of the homes completely engulfed with a large plume of black smoke and flames rising from the gutted building.

Peel police say the fire is now an active criminal investigation and homicide detectives are leading up the investigation along with the Ontario Fire Marshal.

Investigators are also appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the fire or the suspected explosion to come forward.
