hair care product recall

People in Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton and across Ontario may want to check their hair care supply as Health Canada issued a recall for several products.

Hair products are recalled for the detection of benzene, a chemical used industry. Natural sources of benzene include volcanoes and forest fires, according to the CDC. Benzene is also a natural part of crude oil, gasoline, and cigarette smoke.

Benzene is used to make some types of lubricants, rubbers, dyes, detergents, drugs, and pesticides.

The recall involves certain lots of Bed Head TIGI, Dove and Tresemmé Dry Shampoo products that are packaged in aerosol cans, according to Health Canada.

Risk: Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow and blood disorders which can be life-threatening.

As of Oct. 7, 2022, the company has received no report(s) of incidents or injuries related to the use of these products in Canada.
