Huge outdoor pet festival set to hit Pickering next month

A huge festival geared towards animal lovers that attracted over 3,500 people last year will be returning to Pickering next month.
Earlier this month, the city announced that Petapolooza–an event that has seen attendance double over the past three years–will take place at Esplanade Park on Saturday, May 11.
The festival, which will run from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., will kick off the city’s event season and is expected to attract about 4,000 people. The day-long event will feature over 50 exhibitors and rescue groups, live entertainment and giveaways.
Pets that do well in crowds are welcome to attend and water stations will be available throughout the day.
As far as entertainment goes, the event’s website says the SuperDogs, a group of canines who belong to trainers from across North America, will perform three shows. The dogs of various breeds, shapes and sizes are known for performing various feats, including running obstacle courses, jumping rope, playing frisbee and more.
SuperDogs have been featured in films, TV shows, digital shows and various live performances for over 40 years.

The city also says Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue will be on hand during the festivities.
According to the city, the growing festival allows attendees to meet fellow pet owners and lovers, industry professionals, and rescue groups. Other activities planned for the day include a lure course, pet tattoos, mini grooming sessions, a caricature artist and more.
Guests who arrive early can also receive a complimentary swag bag.
Attendees are encouraged to provide a donation of $5 to enter. People over 55, children under 12 and pets can enter for free. According to the city, last year’s event brought in over $33,000 and $10,360 in donations.
Attendees with pets who do not enjoy other pets, as well as crowds and loud noises, are asked to leave their animals at home. Dogs with pit bull similarities or characteristics must be muzzled.
“Petapolooza is our biggest fundraiser of the year and last year we raised just over $30,000,” said Lindsey Narraway, supervisor, Animal Services, in a statement.
“This year, we hope we can raise even more.”
All proceeds from Petapolooza go towards helping Pickering build a permanent animal shelter.
