HSR nixes free NYE rides and extended service as Hamiltonians urged to stay home

In an effort to discourage revellers from heading out on New Year’s Eve this year, the City of Hamilton opted not to provide free HSR rides the night of Thursday, Dec. 31.

“To encourage safe celebrations at home with your immediate household, HSR will not be offering free or extended service for New Year’s Eve,” the transit provider says in a bulletin highlighting holiday service changes.

“The safety of the community and our employees is our number one priority.”

In previous years, HSR has provided free service from early in the evening on New Year’s Eve until the very early morning hours of New Years Day to promote safe travel to those out celebrating the turn of the year.

This year, however, Hamilton is in lockdown due to COVID-19 and residents are asked to keep celebrations among those in one’s household.

Restaurants and bars remain closed for indoor and outdoor service as well and outdoor gatherings have strict capacity limits to help prevent the spread of the virus.

HSR service continues throughout the holidays, though residents are asked to only use the system for essential purposes like grocery shopping, getting to and from work and attending appointments.
