How to share your Amazon Prime membership in Canada

Earlier this week, Amazon announced that there’s a way to share Prime memberships in Canada.

The launch of “Amazon Family”  allows Prime benefits to be shared with one other adult.

Here’s a look at how it works:

Who you can share with and what it includes

Amazon Family allows a Prime member to share their benefits with one other adult in their household.

That includes free delivery, Prime Video streaming, deals, events like Prime Day, DashPass, and more.

Each person keeps their own account, order history, recommendations, and password.

“Living in the same household doesn’t mean you want to share everything. Your order history, your recommendations, and your account security are personal — but that doesn’t mean another adult in your home should miss out on the benefits of Prime,” Amazon said.

How to set it up

Prime members can visit this website or go to “Your Account” and select “Your Amazon Family.”

There, the main Prime member, called the “family organizer,” can invite one other adult in their household. The organizer selects one payment method to share the benefits, the other person accepts, and it’s all finished.

The organizer will receive a notification showing the charge total for any purchases made using the shared payment method. But the invited person can use their own payment method as well.

The household member will also only see limited payment details including the last four digits, expiry date, and billing address.

Amazon says the shared payment method “is required to confirm you and the other adult are in the same household.”

How much does it cost?

It doesn’t cost anything extra.

Prime itself costs $9.99 per month or $99 per year. There is a 30-day free trial available for eligible customers.

Other notes

Amazon says that you’re able to add or remove a household member at any time via the Amazon Family settings.

However, if someone is removed, Amazon says you must wait a year before adding another adult.

Up to four child profiles can also be added to Amazon Family, but Prime benefits can’t be shared with children. That lets a member set up a child’s own Prime Video profile with age-appropriate movies and TV shows.

Additionally, those with the following plans can’t share benefits: Prime for Young Adults, Prime Video, and Prime Shipping.
