Brampton Honey Badgers want 2024 championship run season

The Honey Badgers will try to reclaim their title as reigning Canadian Elite Basketball League champs and bring home the team’s first championship win for Brampton.

The Badger’s 2024-2025 CEBL season starts on Friday with a tilt against the Niagara River Lions with the team looking to move past a disappointing 2023 run that saw them place 4th in the Eastern Conference.

The Badgers took the championship in 2022 but failed to follow up that success after the team moved from Hamilton to Brampton, winning just eight of their 20 regular season games.

And with two big-name players leaving the roster this season it will be up to some new faces to keep the Badgers’ defence tight if they want to make a playoff berth.

Both Christian Vital and Koby McEwen who played on the 2022 championship team and made up the Badger’s backcourt are not returning this year, but the team signed NBA G League guard Javonte Cooke earlier this month.

According to the CBEL Eastern Conference Outlook, Callum Baker of the University of Toronto, David Walker of Toronto Metropolitan University and Cole Syllas of Queen’s University are three guards the Badgers hope can help get the team going for a comeback season.

“Our guys are up to the challenge,” former assistant coach and now head coach Sheldon Cassimy said in an interview with the CEBL. “All of the guys are extreme competitors … we’ll see who earns those (starting) spots and continues to hold the spots throughout the season. Nothing is promised and the guys know that.”

The Honey Badgers moved to Brampton from Hamilton due to the closure of the FirstOntario Centre for repairs. The Honey Badgers launched in 2019 as one of the Original 6 teams of the CEBL.

The Brampton Honey Badgers will kick off the 2024-2025 season on Friday at 7:30 against the Niagara River Lions at the CAA Centre in Brampton. For more information or to watch games live online or to purchase tickets visit www.honeybadgers.ca.
