UPDATE: Police say the road closures have lifted.
The original story follows below.
One man is dead and two police officers are in hospital following a pair of crashes that have closed part of a busy Ontario highway.
The OPP Highway Safety Division said the first crash happened shortly before 3 a.m on Sunday on Highway 401 near Brock Road in Pickering.
A passenger vehicle and a pickup truck were involved in the crash, and a 38-year-old male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.
Eastbound Highway 401 has been closed at Brock Road while the investigation is underway.
But there was a second crash nearby just before 4:30 a.m., police say.
The “secondary collision” was between a police cruiser and a passenger vehicle, and two officers were injured, police say. The officers suffered serious but non-life threatening or life altering injuries.
Highway 401 has also been closed at Whites Road, and police are urging drivers to avoid the area and find alternate routes if possible.
