Update: the lanes reopened around 11 p.m. on Friday.

Friday-evening traffic on Highway 401 in Pickering and Ajax came to a stop shortly before 6 p.m.

The Ontario Provincial Police have confirmed that due to a motorcycle collision, all westbound lanes of the 401 are blocked before Brock Road in Pickering. The stretch of highway is one of the busiest in Canada.

The transportation ministry’s real-time data is also indicating that there is a second collision on the same side of the highway in Ajax. That collision has led to closing all westbound lanes between Westney Road and Centennial Parkway. On-ramps from Salem Rd. have also been closed.

The traffic is already backed up to Highway 412.

“I expect that the closure will last for some time,” OPP Staff Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a video briefing.

An air ambulance is on scene. The air ambulance is taking a motorcycle rider to a trauma centre, which is usually an indication of a critical injury.
