This year’s municipal election in Oakville is almost right around the corner.

With just over 100 days left before the Oct. 24 municipal election, the Town of Oakville is reminding voters and candidates to plan to participate and have their voices heard.

Here are four ways you can prepare for Oakville’s municipal election:

  1. Check the list: One way to save time on voting day is to make sure you are on the voters’ list. Check MMPAC’s VoterLookupwebsite before the end of August to verify details, update your address or add new eligible voters. If you moved to Oakville recently, or just turned 18 years of age, or are a newly sworn in Canadian citizen, be sure to add yourself to the list to receive your voter notice in September.

  1. Assign a proxy: Travel plans in October? Appoint another eligible voter to vote on your behalf, available to anyone who is unable to attend in person to vote. Youth who are enrolled in college or university outside of Oakville and won’t be home for the election can assign a proxy voter. They can download and fill out the proxy formbefore starting the academic year. The assigned proxy voter can then attend in person to complete the registration at Oakville Town Hall in September.

  1. Research your candidates:  View the registered candidateslist and ward map on elections.oakville.ca, connect with them, learn about their campaign and how they will help advance the town’s strategic priorities of livability, engaged community, accountable government, mobility and environment.

  1. Run as a candidate: Anyone who is eligible to vote in Oakville’s municipal election is also eligible to run for the role of Mayor, Regional or Town Councillor, School Board Trustee or Regional Chair. Nomination formsand other details about eligibility are available online. To learn more, register for the August 11 virtual information session featuring a presentation from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing about election campaign and finances, and the town’s Municipal Enforcement Services department providing information about election signs.
