An important organization that has been supporting women and children fleeing violence in Hamilton for decades marked International Women’s Day by accepting a huge donation and a new name.

On Tuesday (March 8) Interval House Hamilton welcomed a $250,000 donation, over five years, from LiUNA in support of the west mountain emergency shelter.

In honour of the occasion, the shelter has been renamed ‘Victoria and Friends’ after Victoria Mancinelli, LiUNA’s director, communications, public relations, marketing and strategic partnerships, central and Eastern Canada, for her work in supporting and advocating for women in the community.

Interval House Hamilton, now known as Victoria and Friends Women’s Shelter, has been providing shelter and support for women and children fleeing abuse, trafficking and violence since 1986.

The organization has grown over the years and beyond serving as an emergency shelter, Interval House provides counselling, legal advocacy and system navigation support to empower women fleeing dangerous situations.

In Hamilton, their programs include:

  • Interval House (Hamilton)/Victoria and Friends Emergency Shelter
  • Women Centre of Hamilton
  • Flamborough Women’s Resource Centre
  • Jared’s Place: Legal Advocacy and Resource Centre for Women
  • MentorAction: Be More Than A Bystander
