Hamilton Police say they could only stand by and watch as a statue of John A. Macdonald was toppled at Gore Park this afternoon.

They are, however, appealing to the public for help in trying to solve the crime.

The statue of Canada’s first prime minister was taken down at Gore Park around 2:15 p.m. (August 14) when, according to police, an individual scaled the statue, put a rope around the figure’s neck, and then climbed back down to help the crowd pull as the statue smashed to the ground.

According to police, approximately 200 people attended the Indigenous Freedom Rally at Hamilton City Hall and then moved down to Gore Park where the statue of Macdonald was located.

Police say that due to the size of the crowd, officers did not get involved and instead monitored the event.

Officers said they remained at the scene until what was left of the statue was removed by city work crews.

No arrests have been made but police say they continue to investigate.

Hamilton Police ask if anyone can help with this investigation they can call 905-546-3816.
