Hamilton man facing attempted murder charge after shooting

A man whom police say is responsible for a shooting on Hamilton Mountain last month has been tracked down in Alberta, and is making his first court appearance on an attempted murder charge today.
The 25-year-old suspect, who is from Hamilton, was arrested by Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers on Aug. 14 after while deboarding a plane at the Edmonton Airport. The Hamilton Police (HPS) had issued a warrant for his arrest after determining that he was the suspect in what was believed to be a targeted incident, and had also fled Ontario.
The shooting happened on July 21, around 9:25 p.m., when HPS officers were called to a townhouse complex in the area of Upper Paradise Rd. and Garth St. for “a shooting incident.” They located a 27-year-old man with significant gunshot injuries.
“The victim remains in critical condition,” HPS said on Thursday.
Abakar Bechir, 25, of Hamilton, is facing one count of attempted murder while using a firearm. He also faces two counts of failure to comply with a release order, indicating that he has a criminal record.
