A man from Hamilton is up on weapons charges after he was spotted allegedly carrying a gun in a Norfolk County town.

Around 2 p.m. September 1, a cyclist was riding down Victoria St in Simcoe, just north of Lake Erie, when he spotted a man with a gun. The OPP did not specify what kind of firearm he had.

The man was walking down Lynn Valley Trail, a 10 km hiking trail through town, when he was seen. The cyclist called the OPP to report the sighting.

Officers with the OPP Canine Services and Emergency Response Team arrived on scene and arrested a man without incident.

The suspect was later identified as Eric Leroy Smith, 38 from Hamilton. He has been charged with a single count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and three counts of failure to comply with probation.

Smith remained in custody until a bail hearing on September 2.
