A Hamilton fire resulted in $400,000 in damages to a split commercial-residential building on Thursday. Local police are now investigating the cause.

The fire erupted at 731 Barton St. shortly before 5 p.m., between Sherman Ave. and Lotteridge St.

Fire trucks then rushed from the Wentworth and Barton Station and reported heavy black smoke rising in the distance as they approached. As a result, the blaze was upgraded to a two-alarm call, and additional resources were brought in.

The first crew to arrive noted heavy smoke and visible flame billowing from a two-storey brick building. The ground floor contained a commercial space, and the top included apartments. Fire could also be seen spreading to the attic.

Crews quickly gained control of the blaze and kept it from spreading to neighbouring buildings. Hoisted up on ladders, firefighters outside were able to break into the building through the roof and contain the blaze in the attic.

No physical injuries were reported from the fire, but the building suffered significant structural damage — estimated at $400,000.

Officials did not indicate whether the property was vacant.
