Sandy Crawley will be the Hamilton Centre candidate for Ontario’s Green Party in the 2022 provincial election.

In their official announcement on Monday (Mar. 21), the Green Party of Ontario referred to Crawley as a “professional actor and musician and life-long area and culture activist.”

Crawley has 19 actor credits, according to IMDB. He served as the president of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists; director of labour relations for the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres; and the executive director for the Documentary Organisation of Canada.

“Sandy has a demonstrated commitment of supporting the creative sector, an important area which is too often an afterthought at Queen’s Park,” said Ontario Greens Leader Mike Schreiner. “His passion for the arts as well as climate action will help make Hamilton a more vibrant, healthy and green community.”

Crawley says he will mostly focus on environmental and climate issues.

“The climate emergency is the defining issue of our time,” Crawley said. “I’m committed to working with my community to build a just transition towards a more inclusive and sustainable Hamilton that benefits us now and for generations to come.”

Like most of the city’s electoral ridings, Hamilton Centre is an NDP stronghold with Andrea Horwath receiving 65.25 per cent of the votes in the 2018 election. The local candidate and opposition party leader has held her seat in Hamilton since 2007.

The Green Party of Ontario has finished fourth in Hamilton Centre in the last four provincial elections, behind the Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, and NDP. In 2018, Green Party leader Jason Lopez finished with 5.75 per cent of the vote — four years after Peter Ormond garnered 8.53 per cent for the Greens.

The 43rd Ontario general election will be held on or before June 2, 2022.
