Thunderstorms, hail and strong winds possible in southern Ontario

There is a risk of thunderstorms in southern Ontario over the next couple of days.

Hail is even possible with some storms in portions of the region on Wednesday.

Here’s a look at what is expected, according to Environment Canada:

Tuesday p.m.

A large part of the province has a risk of storms Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Environment Canada said that isolated or scattered thunderstorms are expected.

They could occur in southern Ontario and portions of northeastern Ontario, up to Timmins.

Up to 25 mm is possible locally.

Wednesday

On Wednesday it appears there is a chance of stronger storms for some areas, labelled location A on the map below.

That includes eastern parts of the Greater Golden Horseshoe, Ottawa, Huntsville, as well as northeastern Ontario.

“Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop Wednesday afternoon and taper off through the evening. These storms may produce wind gusts up to 70 km/h and up to quarter-sized hail,” forecasters said for those areas.

“Confidence is moderate that storms will develop, but low regarding the potential impacts.”

For other areas highlighted in grey on the map, which includes part of southern Ontario and northwestern Ontario, isolated storms are possible in the afternoon and evening.

In both cases, up to 25 mm of rain is possible locally.

Thursday

Come Thursday, strong winds become the concern in southern Ontario due to a low-pressure system moving through the region.

Location B on the map below, which includes the Greater Toronto Area, London, and Windsor, could see gusts of 70 km/h to 80 km/h.

Niagara Region and areas along Lake Erie could see gusts up to 90 km/h, forecasters said.
