A Brampton man has been found guilty of the first-degree murder of his mother-in-law and attempted murder of his wife in a deadly house fire in Brampton more than three years ago.

A Brampton jury handed down the verdict on Saturday after days of deliberation, finding Helder Vertentes-Arruda guilty of the murder of 61-year-old Maria Manuela-Correia, mother of his wife Christine Vertentes-Arruda.

The body of Manuela-Correia was discovered following a fire at the family’s home on Martindale Crescent on Dec. 4, 2020.

The home suffered significant damage as a result of the fire. According to reports six people lived at the home at the time of the blaze, but when Peel Regional Police and firefighters arrived on the scene at least one person was unaccounted for.

Manuela-Correia was a mother and grandmother who “will be deeply missed by all who knew her,” her obituary reads.

Christine has three children and a GoFundMe fundraiser to help support the grieving family has helped raise $10,000.

Helder Vertentes-Arruda has not been sentenced but faces life in prison for the murder of Manuela-Correia.
