Gourmet doughnut shop on Hamilton Mountain set for grand opening

A doughnut shop that has satisfied many a sweettooth in Waterloo Region will have a grand opening of its first location in Hamilton this weekend.

Lady Glaze Doughnuts is opening at 586 Concession St. on Saturday (Nov. 26). Since launching in 2019 in Kitchener, Lady Glaze has also opened location ins Cambridge, Guelph and Stratford that, characterically, offer 20-plus flavours each day, including myriad traditional and vegan options. Wheat-free doughnuts are also on offer on weekend.

Hamilton has no lack of similar shops. But the big three — Donut Monster, Grandad’s Donuts and The Donut Stop — are spread throughout the lower city.

To give anyone with a Homer Simpson-like hankering for hole foods an idea of what ‘hole foods,’ Lady Glazes creates, these are just some of their holiday flavours and the ingredients.

  • Rum Butter and Almond: salted brown butter and spiced rum glaze with toasted almonds
  • Kir Royal: blackberry ermine cream filled with a cassis glaze and gold flake (vegan)
  • Candy Cane Brownie: chocolate glaze, brownie crumb, pink ermine and candy cane crumb
  • Egg Nog Bun: Egg nog glaze, dulche drizzle and egg nog crumble
  • Milk and Cookie: vanilla glaze, milk crumb, cookie dough, sugar cookie
  • Cranberry White Chocolate Cheesecake: white chocolate, cheesecake mousse,  cranberry glaze, graham crumb and white chocolate pearls
  • After 8: mint glaze, chocolate chunk, chocolate crumb and white sprinkles (vegan)

Lady Glaze, started by cofounders Trudy Koen, Rob Theodosiou and Mark Brown, had out-the-door lineups in 2019 when its first shop opened in Belmont Village in Kitchener. A media report at that time related that the founders actually took inspiration from Hamilton, believing that Waterloo Region foodies were had a dearth  of gourmet doughnut shops.

The flagship shop in Kitchener recently re-opened after an expansion to create more seating. Lady Glaze also has a food truck that can be rented for events.

Downtown Hamilton boasts Donut Monster (246 Locke St. S.), while the downtown-adjacent north end has Grandad’s Donuts (574 James St. N.). The Donut Stop is in the east end (617 Parkdale Ave. N.).
