Cream sandwiches have been going totally viral all over the internet and social media lately, and you can now find them in an unexpected spot in Mississauga.

A fried chicken restaurant might be the last place you’d look for a viral Japanese-style cream sandwich, but a spot where the main specialty is poultry has been serving up the sensational sweet item.

Mad Bird in Mississauga mainly specializes in chicken sandwiches and wings that the restaurant calls “face melting hot,” but now they’re also serving Tokyo-style cream sandwiches.

You might have seen these eye-popping cream sandos on social media: deep-fried Japanese milk bread is stuffed with cream and often topped with various ingredients, and also sometimes is torched for a bubbly creme brulee look.

Mad Bird is currently not-so-secretly serving Tokyo-style cream sandos in a variety of flavours. On any given day, the restaurant’s limited selection of cream sandwich flavours might include Sweet Cream, strawberry, banana, creme Brulee, choco cream, Biscoff, key Lime and even special flavours such as matcha.

Videos of influencers trying the global viral Tokyo-style cream sandos have been racking up hundreds of views on Instagram, with people weighing in on Mad Bird’s take on the trend.

One influencer called the new sandos at Mad Bird “crispy on the outside and super fluffy on the inside.”

“You’ll want to enjoy these fresh (not take out!) – think elevated ice cream sandwich,” the influencer wrote in the caption to their video.

“Get lots of napkins because the sandos are a tad oilier + they pack it with cream. These treats are heavy so I recommend getting your one fave flavour to try and then making more visits after.”

The items on the menu at Mad Bird are chicken sandwiches, wings, bowls, bites and sides. The cream sandos aren’t the first foray into creativity for the restaurant: their chicken sandwiches are named the Nashville Napalm, Hot Chili Honey, Torched Seoul, Masala Stinger and The Firebird Waffle.

Videos of the super simple and very affordable original cream sando in Tokyo have gone viral, with some videos getting over a million views.

Deep-fried bread is called “agepan” in Japanese, and it’s thought that the originator of the sando phenomenon is Age 3 in Tokyo, which has become a must-visit tourist destination for people who want to try the sweet deep-fried bread treat that’s been going absolutely viral.

Mad Bird is located in Mississauga at 154 Queen St. S.
