Get $8,000 and studio space through Artist in Residence Program in Brampton

Local artists and creators can get an $8,000 grant and their very own studio space with the return of Brampton’s Artist in Residence Program.

Now in its second year, the program was launched in 2023 to help showcase and develop the city’s diverse arts scene and get the community engaged in creative experiences while building relationships with local artists.

Mixed-media and film artist Sima Naseem was selected as Brampton’s first Artist in Residence and during her tenure ran free community-focused public art sessions and workshops with topics ranging from storytelling, animation, puppetry and more.

Now the city is looking for its next artist or collective to fill the role from June to September with $8,000 in funding and a free workspace.

The residency program is open to local professional artists, collectives and arts organizations and will see the selected candidate hold weekly public office hours and run community-focused public arts programming at the Brampton Library Mount Pleasant Village branch.

“They will also have an opportunity to explore their practice in a community setting, engage with the Library, its customers, and the surrounding neighbourhood, undertake collaborative artistic research or creation, and make and present their work in new ways,” the city says.

Applications will be judged by a selection committee based on the artistic merit of the proposed project, how suited the project is for the space and resources available at the library, quality of experience, and the artist’s ability of the applicant to carry out the proposed project.

The deadline for applications is on May 5 at 11:59 p.m. and the city will be holding a free virtual information session for interested artists on April 25 to learn more about the program and how to apply.
