Sauga Summer Pass in Mississauga.

A popular summer program that gives kids and teens access to free bus rides, swimming sessions and workouts in Mississauga will be extended beyond the end of August for the first time.

Once again this summer, youths ages 12 to 16 can ride MiWay buses, swim at City of Mississauga indoor and outdoor pools, and use city fitness centres for free with the return of the Sauga Summer Pass program.

In years past, the pass has allowed pre-teens and teens to take advantage of those services/amenities free of charge from July 1 until Aug. 31.

However, city councillors gave the green light on Wednesday to a plan that will see the free pass program extended until Labour Day each year in order to align with the summer break from school. Labour Day falls on Monday, Sept. 2 this year.

The recommendation from senior city staff tabled at this morning’s general committee meeting also calls for an increase in program capacity to 11,000 from the previous 10,000.

The plan is expected to be officially approved at next week’s meeting of city council.

Starting in May, those interested can apply for a 2024 Sauga Summer Pass, which prior to 2022 was known as the Freedom Pass.

Officials say nearly 50,000 youths in Mississauga have taken advantage of the summer pass since its inception in 2014.

According to a staff report, the most popular facilities last summer for both fun swim and fitness access were Meadowvale Community Centre (2,467 swim and 3,057 fitness scans), River Grove Community Centre (1,539 swim scans and 2,200 fitness scans) and Malton Community Centre (1,315 swim scans and 989 fitness
scans).

Fitness centre access will be available from July 1 to Sept. 2 at the following community centres (Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.):

  • Churchill Meadows
  • Clarkson
  • Erin Meadows
  • Frank McKechnie
  • Huron Park
  • Malton
  • Meadowvale
  • Mississauga Valley
  • River Grove
