Applications are officially open for Brampton’s new free youth transit and summer drop-in recreation passes.

The city has 2,000 of its Explore Brampton Youth Pass up for grabs, which will let Brampton youths between 12 and 15 years old ride transit and attend city recreation programs free of charge during the summer months.

From swimming pools, badminton and basketball courts, pick up hockey, pickleball, fitness centres, youth will be able to use the pass between July 1 to September 5 to drop-in to everything Brampton Recreation has to offer.

Only Brampton residents born between September 5, 2005 and September 4, 2010 are eligible to apply and proof of Brampton residence, age and a photo of the individual are required.

Every time a pass holder wants to ride transit or participate in a drop-in program, they are required to present their unique pass which will include a photo of the user.

Passes cannot be shared and are not transferable, and “improper transferring” of your pass to a third party could end with the pass being forfeited.

City Coun. Charmaine Williams said the passes are an example “of continued dedication to our city’s youth,” with Mayor Patrick Brown encouraging the city’s youth “to take advantage of this pass and have a fun, safe and more affordable summer.”

Brampton’s Committee of Council approved recommendations for the pilot program last month, which originally called for just 1,000 users.

Youth accepted into the pilot program will be required to complete a survey at the end of the program to be considered for future years if the pilot is extended, and anyone accepted into the program will have to watch an orientation video

Once approved for the program, youth will need to visit select recreation centres to pick up their pass.

The city says Brampton Recreation sold approximately 23,000 drop-in tickets to youth ages 10 to 17 in the summer of 2019.
