Four Brampton residents are facing a lengthy list of firearms and drug trafficking charges after Ontario Provincial Police seized a loaded handgun and suspected illegal drugs during a traffic stop in Grey County.

Members of the Grey Bruce OPP were conducting proactive patrols in the Municipality of Grey Highlands on the evening of June 7 when an Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) camera alerted officers to a Highway Traffic Act violation involving a vehicle travelling on Margaret Elizabeth Avenue.

Police initiated a traffic stop at approximately 8:36 p.m. During the investigation, officers detected what they described as an odour of cannabis, prompting a further search under the Cannabis Control Act.

According to OPP, officers located a loaded 9mm handgun inside the vehicle, along with approximately 36 grams of suspected cocaine and 37 grams of suspected fentanyl.

As a result of the investigation, four Brampton residents were arrested and charged.

Toure Smith, 19, Taque Roy, 20, Brianna Carty, 19, and Shayanna Wynter, 22, each face multiple firearm-related charges, including possession of a loaded restricted firearm, unauthorized possession of a restricted firearm and possession of Schedule I substances for the purpose of trafficking.

Roy also faces additional charges under the Highway Traffic Act and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, including operating a vehicle without a validated permit and operating a motor vehicle without insurance.

All four accused were held in custody pending bail hearings on June 8 before the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound.

Grey Highlands is a rural municipality located in Grey County, approximately 150 kilometres northwest of Brampton and about 50 kilometres south of Owen Sound.

The charges have not been tested in court.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact the Grey County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
