A former Peel police officer who was convicted of 42 counts of fraud and other offences relating to bogus car collisions has now been charged with sexual assault.

On March 3, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) announced that SIU director Tony Loparco has reasonable grounds to believe that 55-year-old former officer Carlton Watson committed a sexual offence against a woman in the summer of 2009.

Peel police contacted the SIU on July 14, 2016 regarding a complaint of a sexual nature that had been made against the former officer. The alleged offense would have been committed when Watson was still a constable with the force.

As a result of the SIU investigation, Watson is facing one count of sexual assault. He is required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on March 27.

The SIU has said that since the matter is now before the courts, the organization will make no further comment.

Watson, who is currently out on bail, was sentenced to five years in prison in 2015 in connection with his numerous fraud convictions. According to the National Post, a judge said that the one-time constable was paid to provide accident reports to make staged accidents look authentic. The scam ultimately cost insurance companies over $1 million in indemnity payments.

On a strange and entirely unrelated note, Watson once won $275,000 in a March 12, 2012 Daily Keno draw.

There is no information on the nature of his alleged sexual offense or the victim at this time.
