Food Opening: Sugar + Butter Baking in downtown St. Catharines makes cookies an art-form

Her business may be called Sugar + Butter Baking but that name might be downplaying owner Sarah McKie’s additional but important skill. Confectionary Art.

While Sarah loved baking, cookie artistry and recipe development since childhood, let’s fast-forward to mom-life with two small children, Sarah rediscovered her love of baking and taught herself the intricate craft of cookie decorating, vision of baking cookies and top them off with beautiful, customer-requested designs.

She found herself devoted to the challenge of bringing her artistic visions to life and in 2018, Sugar + Butter Baking Co. was born. However, it wasn’t until a few weeks ago, it went from a kitchen enterprise to a bricks and mortar business at 11 Summer Street in downtown St. Catharines. And it may be the only downtown St. Catharines business in a little pink house.

Each cookie is handmade, meticulously designed and decorated with love. In addition to custom cookies, Sugar + Butter Baking Co. offers cookie gift sets for every holiday, do-it-yourself decorating kits for kids and a growing menu of other sweet treats.

Said St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik who popped in to say hello, “It all started because owner Sarah McKie had a friend that asked her to make cookies. Well if you have seen Sarah’s creations you would know that they are in fact a work of art and they taste amazing. So from there it spiraled to her opening up her own shop. It’s filled with great light, sweet smells, baking tools I didn’t know existed and of course sugar and butter treats.”

And Sarah, who requires two weeks in advance for custom orders, is mindful of the customer’s special needs. “At Sugar + Butter Baking Co., we believe that dietary restrictions shouldn’t cost you extra. Gluten free and vegan options are available upon request and always, free of charge.”

Sugar + Butter is open Wednesday through Friday 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. Closed Sunday to Tuesday. Call 905-327-9035 for special orders and more information.
