Neuron Mobility are one of three companies bringing e-scooters to Brampton.

The first year of Brampton’s electric scooter program has come to a close with riders helping reduce 14 tons of carbon emissions, the city says.

The two-year pilot program rolled out in April and wrapped up for the season in November, and the city says results and ridership exceeded expectations with approximately 200,000 trips taken.

The city partnered with e-scooter operators Neuron Mobility, Bird Canada and Scooty Mobility for the pilot program which brought 750 eclectic kick-style scooters to the city for short-term rentals.

Brampton became the first city in the GTA to launch an e-scooter program after the province gave municipalities the green light to regulate their use, and the city says residents “have embraced the convenience and eco-friendly nature of the e-scooter initiative, contributing to the program’s overall success.”

The first year of the program saw 110,000 riders sign up through the three different rental companies, travelling over 415,000 kilometres. And with over 200,000 trips taken, the city says e-scooters have saved some 6,000 litres of gasoline and cut down on approximately 14 tons of carbon emissions.

Neuron Mobility alone says its customers racked up more than 200,000 kilometres in trips with an average of around 2.1 kilometres per ride, and some 42 per cent of all trips in Brampton replacing a car trip. The company also says riders spent an average of $39 at local businesses per e-scooter trip for an estimated boost of $3.7 million to Brampton’s economy.

“We are delighted with the positive response our Shared E-scooter Pilot Program received during its inaugural year, with 200,000 trips taken since the spring,” Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said in a statement, adding the city is looking forward to hearing from residents about “how we can make this eco-friendly and accessible mode of transportation an even better success.”

E-scooters providers in Brampton signed an agreement for two years with the city reserving the right to terminate the agreement in the case of a breach. One-year renewals could also be considered for an additional three terms, depending on the outcome of the pilot.
