Seven charges were laid yesterday against the alleged gunman in Hamilton’s first shooting of 2023.

Hamilton Police stated that officers responded to reports of a shooting inside of a crowded Sankofa Lounge and Restaurant at 92 Jackson St. E. shortly after 5 a.m. on Jan. 1. They located a woman with non-life threatening injuries, who was transported to hospital, treated and released.

On Wednesday (Feb. 22), a search warrant was carried out at a Binbrook residence, and a man was charged in connection with the shooting.

Germaine Gray, age 40, faces the following charges:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Careless use of firearm
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a loaded firearm
  • Possession of a firearm contrary to order

Shootings reported to the police in Hamilton have increased in recent years, although deaths have decreased into the single digits. On Wednesday, HPS said it recognizes that gun violence raises fears in the broader Hamilton community.

“Hamilton Police continue to take a zero tolerance approach to gun violence in our community,” HPS said. “We recognize the impact that a shooting has on our community. Public safety is paramount and Hamilton Police continue to work diligently to identify those involved.”
