It’s that time of year again when everyone can’t wait to get back outdoors to play their favourite sport.

And if pickleball and tennis are at the top of your list, the wait is over.

Starting tomorrow, March 29, all outdoor tennis and pickleball courts will be open.

While tennis is a traditional favourite of many, pickleball has taken the city by storm with players, teams and leagues sprouting up regularly and this year is no different as the City of Burlington looks to expand playing opportunities.

The sport has been played longer than you would expect.

Its roots can be traced back to 1965 when a U.S. politician and a businessman, looking for a family sport, cobbled together some equipment and developed the rules. The rest, as they say, is history. As for the name, there are two accounts but the one that we will go with here is that it is named after one of the inventor’s dogs, “Pickles.” You can watch here to learn how to play pickleball.

You can follow this link to find out where tennis and pickleball courts are located.

The Palmer Park tennis courts remain closed as part of the tennis/pickleball court improvements project.
