Feds send $2.4 million for electric vehicle chargers in Brock, Clarington, Oshawa and Whitby

The federal government has sent $2.4 million to Durham to install hundreds of electric vehicle charging stations across the Region.
The Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) has been in place for some time. This latest cash infusion represents the third and fourth release of funds. Next, the Region will receive $607,000 followed by a final $1.8 million payout.
The funds primarily come from Natural Resources Canada, though are supported by several parties including Brock, Clarington, Whitby, the Durham Catholic School Board, Trent University, the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority and Oshawa
They will pay for 259 stations mostly in Brock, Clarington and Whitby. More than 40 of these stations will be available for public use.
“New EV charging stations will help enable these partners to transition their fleet to EVs. With several of these EV chargers also being available to the public, charging will be more available for residents at facilities across the region,” Durham wrote.
The nearly 260 stations represent the largest application of the technology in the region thus far. Per Durham, “These new EV chargers will help provide the infrastructure needed to expand the Region’s corporate fleet to plug-in hybrid and full EVs.”

Regional Chair John Henry said, “Building on our history as a home of automotive energy-sector innovation, we see electric vehicles as a key part of our strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and realize the economic benefits of the clean energy transition.
“We are grateful for the diverse group of funding partners in Round 3 and 4 of the ZEVIP application. Together we will steer our community to achieve our climate goals and create a greener Durham,” he continued.
The Region declared a climate emergency back in January, 2020 and has pursued programs like ZEVIP ever since.
