Some of Hamilton’s most significant historical sites and architectural wonders will be open to the public to explore at no cost for one weekend only and it’s happening very soon.

Doors Open Hamilton will be held over Mother’s Day 2022 weekend (May 7 and 8) and invites residents to come out and tour spaces not usually available for public tours.

The event is hosted by the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, Hamilton Region Branch, and features more than 30 sites in areas from Ancaster and Dundas, to downtown Hamilton, Stoney Creek, and everything in between.

In years past, the event has attracted thousands of people to some of Hamilton’s iconic buildings and historic sites. The pandemic, however, forced the cancellation of any in-person programming for the past two years.

Instead, organizers pivoted to a digital format that welcomed people into these special spaces virtually.

This year, walking tours and site-specific events are happening in locations all over the city over the course of the weekend but there is still an opportunity to explore places (even outside of Hamilton) virtually through Digital Doors Open.

“Tour historic buildings that are being reimagined as new adaptive reuse spaces,” organizers for the event said in a press release.

“Visit award-winning venues that were once derelict, and learn about their transformation.”

Places like Auchmar Manor, Balfour House, Millworks Creative Studios, the Lister Block and many others will welcome curiosity seekers for free during the weekend. The Cotton Factory is also hosting an open house event Saturday afternoon/evening.

Admission to participating museums is also free, though pre-registration is required for Hamilton Civic Museums.
