An electrical shortage caused a fire that sent a heavy plume of black smoke across Mississauga’s skyline on Wednesday night.

Emergency crews responded after “numerous reports” of thick smoke coming from the M3 building at 448 Burnhamthorpe Rd. W. at 8:32 p.m., a Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson told INsauga.com.

The 81-storey tower is Mississauga’s tallest building and the tallest in Canada outside Toronto.

Passersby saw “significant smoke and flames coming from a roof area,” the spokesperson said.

“When we arrived on scene we confirmed that there were significant flames and smoke,” he said.

Fire crews gained access to the roof of the seventh-floor podium and discovered there had been an electrical shortage of power cabling that powered a crane, the spokesperson said.

He said the shortage ignited roofing material near the crane, and then construction foam.

“That was what was creating the thicker black smoke,” he said.

People are living in the building, but there is still construction occurring, he added.

The fire was contained to the roof area and construction material, he said. The building occupants were told to shelter in place.

No injuries to occupants or fire crews were reported.

The fire was under control quickly, and crews were on scene for about two hours.
