Elderly woman dead after multi-vehicle crash in Ajax, Ontario

A 78-year-old woman has died after a head-on collision in Ajax on Wednesday.

Emergency crews responded to the multi-vehicle crash around 1 p.m. in the Kingston Road West and Elizabeth Street area, Durham Regional Police said on Thursday.

A grey Honda HRV was travelling eastbound on Kingston Road West when it crossed into the westbound lanes, striking a silver Dodge Journey head-on, police said.

Police said the Dodge Journey was then struck by a red Mazda Protégé travelling westbound on Kingston Road West.

The 78-year-old female driver of the Honda HRV was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The female driver of the Dodge Journey was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre where she remains in serious condition. No other injuries were reported.

This was one of two fatal collisions in Durham Region on Wednesday. A woman was killed after a vehicle smashed through a bus shelter in Pickering Wednesday afternoon. Another person suffered life-threatening injuries.

The Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene in Ajax to collect evidence. The investigation is ongoing.
