E-scooter use will be safer, more orderly in Mississauga: officials

An initiative launched in 2025 to make it easier and more orderly to park e-scooters in Mississauga returns this week as the city enters year three of its embattled e-scooter/e-bike rental program.

Transportation technology company Lime, one of the City of Mississauga’s partners in its shared micromobility program, said on Monday it’s bringing back its Lime Parking Wardens campaign after the inititative’s success last year.

Prior to 2025, the proper parking of e-scooters across the city — particularly in the waterfront communities — proved troublesome to a large degree.

Lime Parking Wardens seeks to improve the e-scooter parking situation by encouraging riders, via incentives, to follow a few specific rules.

“As part of Lime’s continued efforts to improve parking and tidiness in Mississauga, we’ve brought back our popular new campaign to incentivize riders to park properly,” a Lime official said on Monday in announcing the program’s return for 2026. “Starting this week, lucky riders around the city have the chance to win discounted rides from our parking pardens squad.”

Incentives offered to make e-scooter use more orderly

Launched mid-July of last year, the Lime Parking Wardens program introduced “mandatory parking zones in key areas along with physical corrals, both of which should improve parking all over and especially downtown,” the company said at the time.

To introduce the new system and engage the tens of thousands of riders in Mississauga, Lime offered incentives the last part of the summer in 2025 to those who parked their e-scooters and e-bikes properly, “improving rider behaviour with the potential rewards of free rides and gift cards to local businesses.”

The company, which along with Bird Canada teamed up with the city to launch the e-scooter/e-bike rental program in Canada’s seventh-largest city in summer 2024, said in summer 2025 it had listened to feedback from both city council and the community and subsequently made some key changes to improve the system.

Lime Parking Wardens program kicks off in Port Credit

In a news release, Lime said on Monday its parking wardens program is “part of a broader effort to promote courteous riding and improve pedestrian safety by addressing improper parking and sidewalk riding.”

The company said year two of Lime Parking Wardens will kick off this Thursday and Friday from 4-8 p.m. both days “in high-traffic areas around Port Credit.”

Lime Parking Wardens will be stationed throughout the area to “engage directly with riders, encouraging proper parking and safe riding behavior, and rewarding those who follow the rules with incentives, including discounted ride credits and gift cards to local businesses,” officials added.

“Since launching in Mississauga, Lime has hosted or participated in more than 50 community events focused on safety education and live demonstrations, and has distributed more than 500 free helmets to riders to promote responsible riding,” said Rachel Rappaport, senior regional lead of government relations at Lime Canada. “We’ve listened closely to community feedback and introduced mandatory parking zones and physical corrals in high-density areas to improve pedestrian safety. Our parking wardens program was successful here last year, as well as in cities across Canada, and we’re excited to bring it back as part of our continued efforts to improve service.”

Rappaport added the company will continue to reward riders this year in ongoing efforts “to promote safe riding and proper parking, and keep Mississauga’s streets clear and accessible.”

Beyond the program itself this summer, Lime says it will also continue to invest in rider education through community events and ongoing outreach focused on proper parking etiquette.

Third year of e-scooter rentals launched in late April

Following discussions early in 2026 about potentially pausing Mississauga’s electric scooter rental program until various safety issues could be resolved, the city launched the third year of its shared micromobility program in late April — but with an extra focus on “safety, responsibility and etiquette.”

The larger program, through which the city rents out electric bikes year-round and e-scooters from spring through late fall, is operated in partnership with Lime Technology Inc. and Bird Canada — the companies that provide the devices.

“E‑scooters provide another way for residents and visitors, ages 16 and older, to move around the city, especially for short trips,” the city said late April in announcing the return of the e-scooters. “These devices can make it easier to connect to transit, travel to work or school, or complete everyday errands without a car.”

Since summer 2024, Mississauga’s e-scooter/e-bike rental program has made some 900 electric scooters and 300 electric bikes available for people to rent and use at various places including parks, the downtown core and other neighbourhoods throughout the city.

The program has encountered some difficulties along the way where the e-scooters are concerned, particularly related to the safe use of the devices and proper parking and return of the scooters after rental.

Each year, city staff have reviewed the rental program with an eye toward identifying areas for improvement the following spring and summer.

Ward 8 Coun. and Deputy Mayor Matt Mahoney wanted to pause e-scooter rentals in Mississauga until safety concerns could be properly addressed.

Mississauga Deputy Mayor and Ward 8 Coun. Matt Mahoney has pounded the table on several occasions the past couple of years in efforts to improve e-scooter safety as it relates to use of the city’s rental devices as well as privately owned e-scooters.

Mahoney tabled a motion in early April to temporarily pause the rental of e-scooters in Mississauga until the safety issue could be more fully addressed. The motion was defeated, with city council deciding instead to continue making the devices available but while also taking a harder look at improving safety.

In again making e-scooters available to rent, the city said late last month it encourages riders “to familiarize themselves with riding rules, safety requirements and etiquette before getting on a bike, e-bike or e-scooter … to ensure a safer, more respectful experience for everyone sharing Mississauga’s roads, trails and pathways.”

The city added “every mode of transportation carries a shared responsibility, with safety remaining the top priority. Feedback from council discussions, health partners, operators and community members continue to help refine the program and inform how the city manages and monitors it.”

Officials also noted they’re working with both Lime and Bird to “strengthen messaging and education of proper use of e-scooters, and work collaboratively with our partners including Peel Regional Police to build awareness.”
