E-scooter parking will be more orderly this year in Mississauga, officials promise

One of the city’s partners in its e-scooter/e-bike rental program has introduced a plan to make parking the micromobility devices easier and more orderly, something that’s proven troublesome to date as the initiative is into its second year in Mississauga.

On Thursday, transportation technology company Lime introduced a program called Lime Parking Wardens that seeks to improve the parking situation across the city by encouraging riders to follow the new parking rules.

The company said in a news release its plan includes “mandatory parking zones in key areas along with physical corrals, both of which should improve parking all over and especially downtown.”

To introduce the new system and engage with the tens of thousands of riders in Mississauga, Lime said it will offer incentives throughout the summer to those who park their e-scooters and e-bikes properly, “improving rider behaviour with the potential rewards of free rides and gift cards to local businesses.”

Public will see “real, tangible differences”

The company, which along with Bird Canada teamed up with the City of Mississauga to launch the program in Canada’s seventh-largest city in summer 2024, said it has listened to feedback from both city council and the community and has made some key changes to improve the system.

“We are working hard to make real, tangible differences and are hoping to deliver right out of the gate in 2025. Our Parking Wardens program has been successful in cities across Canada and we’re excited to bring it here to Mississauga as part of continued efforts to improve our service,” Sonia Kandola, Lime’s director of government relations, said in the company’s news release. “We look forward to handing out these awards and to continued results from our efforts to promote safe riding, proper parking and keeping the Mississauga streets we know and love clutter free.”

For the 2025 season, Lime made some improvements to the program, company officials noted, including implementation of mandatory parking zones in high-density areas as well as adding physical corrals for riders to utilize in order to keep streets tidy.

Lime has also worked to add paint lines and bollards in other areas to incentivize good parking, the company added.

After a delay of several weeks, Mississauga launched the second season of its e-scooter and e-bike rental program on May 16. Season two came with the addition of more than 100 new parking stations to help provide “a more orderly and controlled approach to parking,” city officials said at the time.

The extra parking locations are also expected to “help keep regular public bike racks available for personal devices” as the city looks to eliminate several major problems associated with year one of the program in 2024.

Responding to feedback from the public

Sam Rogers, the city’s transportation and works commissioner, said in May that officials heard the public feedback and have responded.

“We’re continuing to adjust the program to improve it and make it run more smoothly. Installing new parking stations in dense areas will help address some of the concerns from last year,” he said earlier. “We’ll be able to keep the devices more organized while freeing up bike racks for personal devices. We’re also planning to offer more education to our residents and riders about safety, rules and parking. We’re committed to ensuring the program meets the needs of our residents and our users.”

The launch of the second season again made some 900 electric scooters and 300 electric bikes available for people to rent and use at various places including parks, the downtown core and other neighbourhoods throughout the city.

Despite the issues related to the program to date, city officials said earlier the initiative has proven popular with residents and it “has experienced significant growth over the last year, becoming a preferred transportation option for many users across the city.”

The city added the new parking stations are expected to significantly improve the program in 2025.

More parking in high-population areas

“The stations will either be marked with physical infrastructure or have markings or a rubber mat on the ground. They will help keep devices organized in high-demand areas including near GO train stations, city-owned transit terminals and express bus stops,” officials said. “There will also be more parking stations in densely populated areas of Mississauga including all five Business Improvement Areas (Clarkson, Malton, Streetsville, Port Credit and Cooksville), City Centre and Lakefront Promenade districts.”

In addition to parking improvements, the city says it will also clamp down on people who violate the rules while using the rented e-scooters and e-bikes in year two.

Lime and Bird together issued 4,300 warnings last year for various types of rider violations, with the most common being improper parking and sidewalk riding.

In 2025, they’re doubling the fine amounts for rider violations as part of an enhanced compliance strategy. Repeat offenders will receive a $20 fine, with continued violations leading to potential account suspension.

For dangerous riding behaviours, such as carrying a passenger or underage riding, both service providers acknowledge a zero-tolerance policy toward these violations and will suspend user accounts upon receiving a report, the city said.
