Durham Region choir honours former assistant director with music scholarship

High school seniors in Durham Region looking to pursue music in college will now be eligible for a $500 scholarship, with the bursary named in honour of the former assistant director of the Whitby-based County Town Singers.
The 2024 Liz Araujo Student Scholarship celebrates the remarkable legacy and unwavering passion for music of Araujo, a 24-year member of the County Town Singers, as well as a member of the Durham Philharmonic Choir, who died in 2017.
“Liz Araujo’s dedication to County Town Singers continues to inspire us every day. Her passion for music and her tireless dedication to our choir touched the hearts of everyone she encountered,” said Gregg McCabe, President of County Town Singers. “This scholarship is a fitting tribute to her memory and a way for us to carry on her legacy of nurturing young musical talent within our community.”

The Liz Araujo Student Scholarship is open to graduating students who aspire to pursue music at the post-secondary level. Eligible candidates are invited to submit their applications by June 30.
“We are passionate about supporting the next generation of musicians and honouring Liz’s spirit through the gift of music,” McCabe added.

The County Town Singers is a community choir formed in Whitby in 1967 during Canada’s centennial celebrations and has captivated audiences through their seasonal musical performances ever since. The choir rehearses in Oshawa’s historic Simcoe Street United Church.
