Just three new COVID-19 cases were reported in Durham Sunday, bringing optimism that the worst of the pandemic is finally behind us.

The three-count followed new case figures of 16 and 20 on Friday and Saturday, which were a little above average for the past couple of weeks. Whitby and Ajax each reported five new cases Friday, while the four new cases reported by Pickering, Ajax and Oshawa were the highest on Saturday.

Only Ajax (2) and Whitby (1) reported new cases Sunday with Oshawa showing its third zero day of the week.

There are just seventy-six active cases of the virus in the region, with one person hospitalized.

There are two long-term care facilities with residents isolating and while the data shows five schools with outbreaks, all but one has seen all cases resolved. There is still one workplace outbreak.

The percentage of 12-and-over Durham residents now fully vaccinated stands at 81.7.
