Durham-area farm and winery set to open for the season

A Sunderland farm and winery known for its fruit wines, cider, and meade will reopen for the season on May 4.
Applewood Farm & Winery, a family-run establishment that has been producing an array of beverages for over 20 years at its 2055 Saintfield Rd location in Brock, recently announced a list of activities and events that residents can participate in from May until December.
According to Applewood’s website, anyone who visits the family-friendly farm on opening weekend (May 4 and 5) can try two new ginger ciders on the patio.
The website also says visitors can expect live music most Sunday afternoons.
The farm will host a Spring Maker Market on June 1, as well as a sold-out gourmet cookie workshop on June 8.
Other activities set to take place over the summer and fall months include strawberry picking, campfire nights, a strawberry social with strawberry wine, a themed cocktail and sweets, Canada Day celebrations, Sangria Sundays, a Paint and Sip event that will invite attendees to create a sunflower porch sign, a feather workshop and more.

Once fall hits, the farm plans to host a fall cookie decorating workshop and a pizza and pints night. Visitors will also be able to enjoy typical fall attractions, including a pumpkin patch, corn maze and wagon rides.
Holiday-themed events will take place as the weather cools and Christmas approaches.
According to the farm’s website, strawberry picking begins in mid-June, mulberries come out in late June or early July, and garlic harvesting will take place in late July or early August.
As far as beverages go, the website says that once the farm opens, visitors can purchase new meade, blueberry cider, rhubarb liquor and new cinnamon heart moonshine.
Honey, beeswax candles, apple cider, and preserves will also be available.
“Our wines are made from fruit and honey harvested right here on our farm, as well as fruit supplied by other local farms,” the website reads.
“We look forward to welcoming you to our new farm, winery, and home.”
