This drone show in China shows how elaborate the visual displays can be at night.

A test drone show will light up the sky at Niagara Falls tomorrow (Sept. 29) night, starting at 10:05 p.m.

Sponsored by Niagara Falls Tourism, Canadian company North Star Drones will operate 300 drones at approximately 400 feet in the sky between Skylon Tower and Clifton Hill. The test show will last about 10 minutes.

“The test will feature drone lights forming shapes that represent a selection of the many world-class attractions Niagara Falls has to offer visitors,” said the group. “The objective of this test is to understand sight lines in the area. It will have no audio component.”

Of course, with countless residents and businesses calling on Niagara Parks to replace their fireworks show, which runs a consecutive 144 days from the May long weekend to Thanksgiving, with drones instead, the question has to be asked: are drones going to replace fireworks?

Not quite, said the tourism group. “There is no immediate plan to replace fireworks at Niagara Falls with drones.”

“This test is part of a larger discussion about whether drone shows may represent a viable supplementary addition to fireworks at Niagara Falls while ensuring to preserve the natural environment.”

They added, “This test is part of ongoing efforts by stakeholders to ensure Niagara Falls continues to offer leading, world-class visitor experiences. The test will assist in educating stakeholders with regards to show content, length, sight lines, and other relevant information.”

The pathway between Robinson St. (Skylon Tower) and Clifton Hill will be closed to pedestrian traffic for safety reasons for the duration of the show and until the drones have landed at roughly 10:30 p.m.
