The driver of a farm tractor that was travelling slowly on the shoulder of the busy QEW in Oakville early Saturday morning when it was struck by a box truck has been charged by police.

Officers with the OPP’s Highway Safety Division said via social media on Saturday afternoon that the driver has been charged with careless driving in the two-vehicle collision that occurred at about 1:30 a.m. near Trafalgar Road.

Police said there were no serious injuries in the early morning crash in which the box truck struck the tractor from behind on the shoulder of the QEW.

According to police, the tractor was travelling at 20 km/h when it was hit by the larger vehicle.

“This led to multiple vehicles hitting the debris,” police added.

A number of people commented on the OPP social media post, including one who wondered, simply, “Why was there a tractor on the QEW?”

Another commenter echoed that sentiment: “Are tractors even allowed on the QEW?”

A somewhat different take on things came from another person, who observed: “OK, I get the tractor shouldn’t be on the highway, but how do you hit any vehicle on the shoulder?”

The farm tractor lost one of its tires as a result of the crash. (Photos: OPP X)
