The competition for the hearts and tastebuds of burrito fans in downtown Hamilton has been spiced up with the addition of a growing fast-casual chain.

Mucho Burrito Fresh Mexican Grill, which heretofore had only one location in the city, has opened its first foot traffic-friendly location in Royal Connaught Square at the corner of King and John streets. The new restuarant at 110 King St. E. opened on Monday (March 7). The restaurant has a corner location in the historic building, helping more natural light beam into a store interior that, in Mucho Burrito’s characteristic fashion, relies on earthy colour based on authentic Mexican decor. The location also has space for outdoor seating. The Starbucks coffee shop next door, for instance, has a patio during the warmer months.

Like many of its contemporaries, Mucho Burrito’s menu includes a BYOB (build your own burrito/bowl) component. The chain’s fillings and garnishes, though, include the likes of charred corn, harvest veggie medley, in-house pickled onions, jalapeño slaw, roasted chickpeas and vegan mozzarella. Meat-free proteins include plant-based veggie crumbles. A bowl, with a dessert, will generally run under $18.

The location is open from 10:30 to 10 a.m., seven days a week.

In terms of beverage options, Mucho Burrito serves Pepsi products, but also offers Jarritos fruit-flavoured soft drinks, which are less carbonated than many North American brands. Some of its locations offer a selection of beers.

Mucho’s new location is less than 50 metres by foot from a competitior. Burrito Boyz has a location at 66 King E., next to Gore Park. There is also a Burrito Bandidos a bit farther up the street at 228 King St. W.

The other Mucho Burrito location in Hamilton is at 1508 Upper James St., on Hamilton Mountain.

The chain is part of the publicly traded MTY Group, which is based in Richmond Hill.
