Construction activity is ramping up beside a state-of-the-art community centre in Mississauga’s west end as plans to complete a new sports complex begin to take shape.
Mattamy Sports Park, located beside Churchill Meadows Community Centre on Ninth Line, already features amenities that include basketball courts, outdoor fitness equipment, a playground, skateboard area, lit sports field, spray pad and a leash-free dog park.
A number of other facilities are currently under construction and expected to open to the public in late 2025 or early the following year.
“The grading and earthworks currently underway at Mattamy Sports Park is part of phase 2 of development of the park,” Mississauga Ward 10 Coun. Sue McFadden said in her latest online newsletter.
She added the following will be completed in the next 12 to 18 months:
- a full-sized, lit and tournament-grade cricket pitch with bleacher seating and batting cages
- a multi-purpose turf field for field hockey and soccer
- a domed tennis facility with six courts for indoor tennis and pickleball
- a paved trail with benches around the stormwater pond
- infrastructure such as a parking lot and washroom facility
“I’m looking forward to the completion of all of these additional amenities to complete Mattamy Sports Park,” McFadden continued, noting the sports complex, when fully formed, will be suitable for “leisure recreation from local pickup sports to hosting international tournaments and everything in between.”
City of Mississauga officials unveiled details of the domed tennis/pickleball facility back in March, noting it will offer year-round play for residents.
The $4.3-million Mississauga Premier Racquet Club is expected to open later this year and include space for the relatively new and popular sport of pickleball.
Mattamy Sports Park, named in June 2022, spreads out over 57 acres and first opened in October 2021 as part of the $51-million state-of-the-art Churchill Meadows Community Centre.
