Three new diamonds at Trafalgar Sports Park in Halton Hills are finally ready for use after years of planning and construction.
The park now features four diamonds in total along with 11 sports fields.
“I am happy to see these diamonds completed and ready for use,” said Mayor Rick Bonnette.
“I want to thank our local sports groups, residents and Town staff for collaborating to complete this project, it is an amazing facility and a great addition to the sports park.”
The facility features three full-size, lit, irrigated ball diamonds that include fencing and bleachers.
Additionally, a picnic shelter sits at the hub of the diamonds with tree planting along both sides of the adjacent pathways.
The final phase of the project called “Field of Dreams,” is in the final design stages and will feature a washroom and concession building that is set to be constructed in 2022.
This year, the diamonds will be in full use by local sports leagues and residents in line with Ontario’s Roadmap to Reopening protocols.
The diamonds were funded through a partnership between the Town, Halton Hills Minor Baseball Association (HHMBA) and Georgetown Slo-Pitch League (GSL). A grant for $150,000.00 was also secured through the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
Along with a diamond being named to recognize the Hornby ball community, council has supported the third diamond at the sports park being named to recognize DeeDee Haynes-Ridley, a local volunteer who made significant contributions to sports and the community. Following her tragic passing in April, four local baseball groups, representing more than 2,700 participants, requested the diamond be named in her memory.
This year, Halton Hills’ tradition of hosting a grand opening celebration was not possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents are encouraged, however, to drop by and use the facility at their leisure, while following social distancing protocols.
