Conservation halton warning milton oakville burlington

Forecasts of substantial rainfall over the next few weeks has prompted a warning for Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills from Conservation Halton.

Both Environment Canada and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s (Surface Water Monitoring Centre are forecasting that a low pressure system will bring widespread rain across southern Ontario starting overnight tonight (Thursday) and ending Saturday morning.

Currently, 25-45 mm (1-2 inches) of rain is expected, with higher local amounts associated with thunderstorms possible on Thursday afternoon and evening.

“The anticipated rainfall combined with increased runoff from wet soil conditions will likely result in elevated water levels in rivers and streams within our jurisdiction,” said a spokesperson in a news release.

“Widespread flooding is not anticipated. However, fast-flowing water and flooding of low-lying areas, natural floodplains, and areas with poor drainage may be expected.”

Conservation Halton is recommending that all residents and children keep a safe distance from all watercourses and structures such as bridges, culverts, and dams.

Elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and cold water temperatures combined with slippery conditions along stream banks continue to make these locations extremely dangerous. Please alert children in your care of these imminent dangers.

This Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety will be in effect through Saturday April 13.
