Durham Region is about to host its next annual curbside giveaway day.

On May 4, residents in Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby can place their unwanted, but still useful, items on the curb for others to take off their hands.

Residents must clearly mark the items as free and return to collect anything unclaimed at the end of the day.

Acceptable items to put out for pickup include;

  • Appliances
  • Bicycles
  • Tools
  • Furniture
  • Books/movies/DVDs
  • Kitchen utensils
  • Building materials
  • Computers and electronics
  • Yard and garden equipment
  • Clothes
  • Usable paint
  • Sporting goods
  • Musical instruments
  • Plants, potted trees, etc.
  • Other durable goods

However there is also a list of unacceptable items such as;

  • Opened or used Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Garbage or recyclables
  • Chemicals of any kind
  • Weapons of any kind
  • Food items
  • Mattresses for bedbug infestation
  • Broken furniture
  • Dangerous illegal items
  • Car or booster seats
  • Baby gates and walkers
  • Cribs or cradles

If the items aren’t all claimed by 7 p.m. the Region advised participants to collect them and donate to charity, give to a local thrift shop or post them on a free classifieds website, such as Kijiji, Varage or Facebook Marketplace.

Participants should ensure their items do not block the sidewalk or road traffic.

“Curbside Giveaway Day events are an opportunity to reduce the amount of garbage going to disposal by giving away your unwanted items or by going on a treasure hunt to find some new-to-you items,” the Region wrote, “It’s a fun way to help the environment while connecting with your community.”
