With thanksgiving around the corner, CUMIS decided to focus on the second part of the word, ‘giving’.

The insurance company, which is located on the north side of Hwy. 403 near the Waterdown exit, has been donating apples to local community organizations for 30 years.

The building sits adjacent to one of the few non-commercial apple orchards left in Burlington. Three decades ago, several employee volunteers decided to hold an Apple Day and pick and donate them.

This year, about 13,000 pounds of apples were harvested and donated to local community groups, including Food for Life and Halton Food for Thought.

The donation took the total number of apples donated to more than one million.

Over 30 years, CUMIS and Co-operators volunteers have donated enough apples to make 346,000 cups of apple juice or bake bake 230,000 apple pies.
