COVID-19 new case load in Durham down slightly to 31; 13 from Whitby

Durham Health reported 31 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, down slightly from 34 reported the day before.

Whitby, after reporting zero cases Monday and six Tuesday, jumped to 13 new cases yesterday, bringing their seven-day total to 42, which trails only Ajax’s 50.

There remains six people in hospital and one person in ICU.

The outbreak that began August 26 at Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa and has already claimed five lives has nearly run its course. There are just six residents who are still self-isolating.

The good news from the vaccination department is vaccine clinics have seen an uptick in first doses, with 6,100 people receiving their first dose in the past two weeks.

To date, 83 per cent of residents 18 and older in Durham have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, with 78 per cent of individuals in this age group being fully vaccinated. For residents 12 and older, 82 per cent have received at least one dose, while 77 per cent are now fully vaccinated.
