Cop faces charge in 'serious' crash that left woman injured in Brampton, police watchdog says

A crash that left a woman with serious injuries in Brampton has a sergeant with Peel Regional Police facing a dangerous driving charge.

The two-car collision happened around 9:30 p.m. last Aug. 28 when a Peel police officer crashed his cruiser into a blue sedan being driven by a woman in Brampton.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says the officer was on Bovaird Drive East headed to a medical call for service when he crashed into the other vehicle at the intersection of Dixie Road.

Pictures from the scene provided to Insauga.com show the wrecked blue four-door sedan with significant damage to the front passenger’s side and a damaged Peel police cruiser, which appears to have also struck a utility pole.

Both the police officer and the 23-year-old female victim were transported to hospital, and the SIU says the woman was “seriously injured” in the crash while the officer only suffered minor injuries.

Now, months after the serious collision, the SIU says an acting sergeant with Peel police is facing a charge in relation to the crash.

The SIU says Acting Sgt. Jonathan Kreis is facing one count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on May 15 to answer the charge.

Because the case is before the courts the SIU said no additional details about the collision would be released. A request for comment on whether the accused officer faces any disciplinary action was not immediately returned by Peel police.

Anyone who may have surveillance or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the crash, or any other information on this incident can contact Peel Regional Police by calling 905-453-3311.
