An old-time Mississauga plaza that is currently home to an Islamic cultural centre, hair stylist, restaurants and a vacuum repair shop could be replaced by a large condominium complex.

The proposal calls for the elimination of Streetsville Plaza on Queen St. N. (Mississauga Rd.) in Streetsville just north of Britannia Rd.

A meeting of the City of Mississauga planning committee will discuss the proposal this evening (Dec. 5).

The proposal for what is named 21-51 Queen St. N. calls for a nine-storey condo to occupy the entire current space of the plaza. The plan says the base of the building will be for commercial uses such as stores and provide 390 housing units.

It is not known if the current tenants will find a home in the new building once complete.

The plaza under consideration (not to be confused with Streetsville Centre Plaza in the heart of downtown Streetsville) is one of the oldest in the city. With a 1950-60s design, the plaza has a large parking area in the front facing the street, with stores located in the back. When it originally opened, it was anchored by a Dominion grocery store and had a branch of the Bank of Commerce. Belmonte Hair Design has been located in the plaza since the 1970s when Tony Belmonte took over from Frank’s Barber Shop.

A public meeting has already been held about the proposal where residents did have concerns about the potential increase in traffic and noise.

The proposal will still have to go through several stages of the Mississauga planning process before it is approved.
