A Danish retail chain that specializes in household goods, furniture and home decor is pulling out of its location in an Ontario town near Toronto.
Jysk, located in a plaza at the northeast corner of Kerr Street and Speers Road in Oakville, has announced that Sunday, May 11, will be its last day of operation.
The store has been located in the plaza known as Oakville Commons since 2011.
“Sorry to see this place go. I’ve bought a lot of things at Jysk over the years. Another one bites the dust,” said one commenter on an Oakville-based Facebook group.
Jysk operates over 3,400 stores across 48 countries and was founded in Denmark in 1979. The store is considered the country’s largest international retailer. It has been in Canada since 1996 and has been operating 68 stores across the country.
The plaza where it is located is one of the oldest and largest in central Oakville and has long been eyed for a major high-rise housing redevelopment. It is currently also home to Food Basics and Shoppers Drug Mart.
Reports indicate that Dollarama is being considered to move into the space that Jysk has occupied, but that has not been confirmed.
Long-time Oakville residents remember that the Jysk location was the home of Canadian Tire before it relocated further up Kerr.
