A Canadian retailer with over 50 years history plans to close all stores across the country.
Last week, Peavey Mart, a Canadian business, announced plans to close 22 Peavey Mart locations in Ontario and Nova Scotia. It now appears all stores across Canada will close.
More than 90 stores across Canada are slated to close, according to Retail Insider.
The store is a farm and ranch retailer, which carries pet, work wear, lawn and gardening goods.
Closing the Ontario and Nova Scotia stores was “an initial step in the company’s broader efforts to address current challenges, strengthen its operations, and position itself for future sustainability,” Peavey Mart said in a press release.
Like several other retailers, the company is struggling.
“The Canadian retail environment has faced significant disruption over recent years, and Peavey has not been immune to these challenges,” said Doug Anderson, president and CEO of Peavey Industries LP.
Peavey Industries noted the impact the closures will have on employees and communities.
“To our employees, we cannot thank you enough for your hard work, resilience, and passion,” the company stated. “You have been the heart of Peavey Mart, and your contributions have left a lasting legacy. To the communities we have served, we are grateful for the trust and loyalty you have shown over the years. We know how much the Peavey Mart brand means to you and we want to thank you for the years of support.”
The following Ontario Peavey Mart locations are scheduled to close by or before the end of April 2025: Arnprior, Bedford, Bowmanville, Brockville, Chatham, Collingwood, Cornwall, Goderich, Grimsby, Kingston, Kitchener, Lambeth, Mount Forest, New Liskeard, Sarnia, Smiths Falls, St. Catharines, St. Jacobs, St. Thomas, Sudbury, Woodstock, and Uxbridge. Rockland and Hyde Park locations are also closing, which had been announced by the company earlier.
Retail Insider indicated liquidation sales would start this weekend.
Peavey Mart started as National Farmway in 1967 in Dawson Creek, B.C., according to the website.
By 1975, the chain became known as Peavey Mart, a subsidiary of Peavey Company of Minneapolis. In 1984, the company returned to Canadian ownership. In 2017, Peavey Industries LP acquired the TSC Stores banner, based in London, Ontario with stores operating in Ontario and Manitoba.
Several retailers have announced closures in January. Johnston & Murphy, a U.S. footwear and clothing company, announced it is shutting all of its Canadian stores and e-commerce site as of Jan. 18.
Low-cost fashion retailer Ricki’s and cleo announced the closure of stores across Canada, and major Canadian retailer, Frank and Oak, filed for bankruptcy.
